But I don’t have an IT degree!It doesn’t matter. There are literally millions of well paid IT professionals out there and only have a small percentage of them have IT degrees.
I’ve never written a program in my life!It doesn’t matter. Maybe 30 years ago the bulk of jobs in the IT sector were for computer programmers. Today programmers represent a small, and fast shrinking, percentage.
But how can I class myself as an IT professional – I just work in the business?Not true. As we said above, most business functions today require some knowledge of IT systems, and dealing with IT systems and people. IT used to be a separate part of the business, often hidden away from “real” people. Today almost everyone works in the IT industry in one form or another.
You don’t believe me? Which of the following jobs could today be classed as working in the IT sector?
- Call centre operator or manager
- Book keeper
- Purchasing clerk
- Performance analyst
- Airline check in
- Business analyst
- Store man
- Retail sales
- Customer service
The The fact is they ALL are, and hundreds more besides. In fact it’s hard to find a job today that doesn’t have a significant IT component.
But aren’t many of these jobs low paid?Yes and no. In fact there are millions of people in jobs like these who are low paid. Yet perversely there are lots of people in the same or similar jobs who are very well paid.
But isn't IT full of geeks working on complex technical problems?This is one of the great myths. It always reminds me of a comment made by Jerry
Weinberg. Jerry has been writing for years about the psychology of IT and
consulting.
If you don't know him, look him up for some very entertaining and useful
reading. In his "4 laws of consulting" he states (in law 2): "No matter how it
looks at first, it's always a people problem".
People outside of IT, and even many people in it, believe that the IT world is
full of geeks solving highly technical problems. I believe, along with Jerry,
that the IT world is really about solving people problems.
Even though I came up through a technical stream myself, programming, I soon
came to realise that the technical problems were mostly quite easily solvable -
it's the people problems that get you every time.
In our books we talk about Generalists and Specialists. The specialists almost
by definition are those working mainly on technical stuff. While this technical
stuff has to happen, it's normally straightforward and doesn't cause a trained
person too many problems.
Generalists on the other hand tend to be working more with people related stuff.
It's no surprise that this category of jobs is growing faster than the
specialist roles.
So, as we have said many times, you don't have to be a technical geek or a
mathematical wizard to make a worthwhile career in IT. Common sense and people
handling skills are what you really need.
This is actually good news, as it puts those desirable and well paid IT jobs
well in the reach of non-technical people.
The answer is actually quite simple – you need to know some secrets of how these industries really work and how you can take advantage of that. That and some broad based knowledge, timing, and a can-do attitude.
We have already said you don’t need an IT degree. The world is littered with graduates on low money.
You don’t need to be an in-depth expert, or “techie”, in a particular field. Given the speed at which IT moves, sometimes today’s experts become tomorrow’s unemployed. You have to stay ahead of the pack to survive.
So what are business and IT managers really looking for?
In a nutshell they want people who can get the job done. There are a huge number of jobs out there which require some general knowledge and a can-do attitude – you don’t have to be an in-depth expert in one narrow field.
So, you need to get a broad base of knowledge in the tools and techniques used by businesses and the IT world. I’ll let you into another little secret – none of these things are actually very difficult. Many of the jobs are made to sound a lot grander and more difficult than they really are.
You can move from low paid jobs at the bottom of the IT ladder, or even in non-IT jobs, using our simple 7-step strategy.
Some real-world examples:Julia worked as a clerical assistant. She was given a minor role in an IT project that needed staff. She talked with the business analysts and project managers to find what they actually did and how they did it. Within a year she was offered a role as a Business Analyst and within two a role as an IT Project Manager. Can you imagine what this did to her income level?
Malcolm joined a small programming team for some work experience and generally was used as a “gopher”. He took interest in what the programmers were doing and started to help them out. Within six months he was promoted to a job as programmer and within two years worked as a Senior Consultant with a global accounting firm.
Graham was allocated to a programming team as a “gopher”. He learned quickly, and rapidly became first a programming assistant, then a professional programmer.
Keith was a Basic programmer, who took a 6 week programming job back in the recession of 1990-1991, as that was all that was available. He was asked to recast a Basic program into the new Visual Basic (VB) which had just been released. He’d read about it but was no expert. That job propelled him into the VB world and he is still prospering today.
Simon was a technical support guru in a call centre. He learned about Business Analysis and Project Management by reading and observing. He is now a Senior Business Analyst far away from the call centre.
Darren was a young man with an interest in PCs. he manged to get a temporary job as a "gopher" in an IT department, basically fetching and carrying and installing. Two years later he is a senior support person earning 4 times as much as he was.
Martin was working as a telephone sales operative. using our method he quickly moved to team leader, support technician and business analyst, more than quadrupling his income in only 3 years.
